It’s the year of the Ox, but since it’s a yin metal year, it could be also be called the year of the Golden Cow. The yoga practice this week at Rexburg yoga will feature cat/cow pose, and cow face pose. Also a few movements from the QiGong tradition.

Winter Season of Water

Photo of winter in Idaho by MartiHarrison

Winter represents the most Yin aspect in Chinese medicine.  Yin is the dark, cold, slow, inward energy.  Growing, saving, and building potential for new life in the spring.  Rest is important for revitalizing the kidneys.  It is a good time to look inward and self-reflect.  Relax and calm the mind but raise the spirit with carefully chosen activities.

Chinese New Year 2020 Year of the Rat

Our Chinese New year practice is always fun and this is the year of the rat. Rats and mice are small creatures but when they all are working together at a large obstacle – it eventually gives way. It’s a year to gather and cultivate one’s own resources, then form alliances with others who share similar values. Gather and organize. Here are some photos from the partner poses each group came up with.

Scorpion

During these last months of the year, the morning class will explore and play with scorpion pose. It takes strength and flexibility so we will build up to it over time. Even then, since scorpion is an advanced arm balance, we will enjoy the journey of developing the strength, even if no one in the class accomplishes the arm balance. There are many modifications to be tried and we hope to have fun with whatever scorpion pose is accomplished. scorpionpose Continue reading

Lymphatic system

Our practice on Tues July 11, was one that focused on lymphatic drainage. We learned a self-massage technique in the neck area and then did plenty of long-held inverted postures. Since we don’t have a video of Shelly teaching this method, here is a similar video so we can practice this massage as often as we like.

Come as you are

A few weeks ago I watched the broadcast of the 2nd annual Accessible Yoga Conference.
One of the presenters was Dianne Bondy
She’s very passionate about bringing yoga to communities that don’t fit the common yoga population.

This quote comes from her. sunsetquote

Quote from Class

A quote by Sally Kempton, shared in class in February.

By improving your ability to fully receive, you will come to notice how many gifts are being offered to you at every moment. The wind in the trees, a stranger’s smile, the wagging tail of a dog will feel like personal offerings of affection, gifts of beauty and wisdom. Whatever you give back becomes part of that same dance–the dance of giving and receiving, in which we’re all each other’s partners.
