A Centering Practice

Center is not a place but a dialogue. Your dialogue with the floor and sometimes with the wall. The dialogue between your mind and your body. A playful dialogue. A relaxed dialogue. A curious dialogue. Can you observe and respond? Pose and repose? Can you be in the pose instead of doing the pose? Can you let yourself shimmer in the center?

2009 Global Mala

Class extras No Comments »

From Leslie: September 19, 2009 is the day for Rexburg to celebrate with the world in a Global Mala.

Here is a quote from the Global Mala site:   “The Global Mala Project belongs to the global yoga community. This is a seed of a world-wide experiment into the power of meditation in action. The purpose of the Global Mala is to unite the global yoga community from every continent, school or approach to form a mala around the earth through collective practices based upon the sacred cycle of 108 on the weekend of Sept 19th, Fall Equinox as the yoga world’s offering to further the UN International Peace Day. Each center offers their form of a Yoga Mala according to their yoga tradition and inspiration”

World Gym in Rexburg is sponsoring this year’s celebration on Saturday morning September 19th, 2009 starting at 8:30 am. If you are not a member of World Gym you can come and participate in the yoga practice for free that morning. You will need to fill out a some info at the front desk as a guest for insurance purposes. The practice will be in the fitness room.

This year we will celebrate the global yoga mala with 108 sun salutations. If you want to join us for some of the practice but not the full 108, you may. We will have 2 guest teachers along with myself (Leslie) who will help lead the group thru the 108. Join in as much as you like that morning. Since we are not sure of attendance numbers, please bring your own mat if you own one. The gym has some to use if you do not own a mat.

If you want to move your intention for peace out into the world, choose a favorite trusted charity and donate a certain amount to that charity. This is done not as a group, but personally so you choose a charity that you trust. Or volunteer at an organization that needs your help. There are plenty of ways to practice yoga off the mat in celebration of global peace.
More info to come to the Global Mala site

Following will be the theme of the practice and our method of counting the sun salutations:

Each person has little or no power to bring about peace in a far away place in the world. Our greatest and most efficient use of our desire for peace is to accomplish that within our own heart. We have total power and control over the peace in our thoughts, words, and actions. That is the intention of this global mala celebration. Inner Peace.

How do I make peace in my own mind and heart? It is a journey you take with God but here are 7 suggestions. First, Awareness of how things really are. Next, Acceptance of how things really are. Then, a New Vision of the peace you desire. A Vibrant Hope that it can absolutely occur for you. Next, Behaving as If you already felt the peace you have envisioned, including abundant gratitude. Then finally, Forgiving yourself and others in all areas. Practice these ideas and inner peace will be the result. We will use these ideas to help us count thru the 108 sun salutations. We will practice 4 groups of 27. Each group of 27 will be practiced as 3 groups of 9 using the 7 ideas for inner peace, for ourself and for another person for the 9. In between each group of 27 we will do some twists, take a break if needed and switch teachers before continuing.

Freedom Yoga Intensive

This info is also on a page – look on the tab on the right hands side. But I will also put the info here:

From Leslie:
Summer 2009
While I agree that its a good time to conserve, spend less, and focus on the top priorities in life, it is not necessary to limit dreaming, desires and celebrating creative solutions. I desire and dream of attending a 3 day yoga retreat or intensive this summer and since I don’t want to spend the time or money attending one far away, my solution is to create one right here in Rexburg.

The theme of this intensive is call Freedom Yoga. This is a term originated by Erich Schiffman. It is a gathering of friends who practice yoga in their own way but together as a group. Because both Shelly and Leslie want to enjoy the intensive, the instruction will be minimal. (Except for the normal class times) For this reason it is best for those coming to already be familiar with yoga and be able to modify poses for themselves. The cost will be to cover the extra time in the dance studio. We need to have an idea of how many are coming, so we can split the cost of of the extra rent equitably. After looking at who might come, we have decided upon $10 for those who come to to dance studio. To make it easier, it will be $10 whether you come 1 extra day or 3 – if you use the dance studio.

Dates for the Freedom Yoga Intensive are:
Monday June 29
Tuesday June 30
Wednesday July 1st
Here is a tentative schedule of events:

Monday 7-9am – Practice at Ballet Arts studio.
Monday 4-6 pm Practice at Ballet Arts studio.
Tuesday 9-11 am 2 hour class -Ballet studio – This is the regular time for morning practice and there will be greater instruction for this class than others during the intensive. For those that just want to come to their regular morning practice with no changes, you may leave at 10. We will finish this class by all bringing healthy snacks to share at the end. Beginners welcome

Tuesday 6:30-8:30 pm 2 hours class at World Gym. This is the regular time for the World Gym class and there will be greater instruction here as well. Regular class members may choose to stay the extra hour or not. Beginners welcome. Those not belonging to World Gym can attend with a $10 admission at the front desk.

Wednesday morning – It’s going to be hot and sunny, so we need to get started early to avoid rattlers. 6:45 am. Meet at Beaver Dick Park. It takes 15 minutes from downtown Rexburg to get to Beaver Dick park. There is some road construction there so here’s my cell # so you can communicate with me that you are on your way if you are not there by 6:45ish. 241-9085 We will carpool to the paved public parking lot on the West side of R mountain. If we can be climbing by shortly after 7 am, that would be good.

The trail is very steep and is made of sand, puffy dirt, and rock. I would recommend bringing a walking stick. It gets really steep in places. Bring water also.

It takes about 30-45 minutes to get to the top depending on fitness level. And it takes about 20 minutes to get down just going fast with no stopping. So if we add all that time together it would be about 2 hours from and back to Beaver Dick park. We will do a short yoga break on top of the mountain (no mat) and then a 30 minute practice back at Beaver Dick park at the end. So a guess at total time from Rexburg and back is 3-3.5 hours. Bring a towel or blanket or your mat for sitting on the ground at the park.

For those who do not want to hike, Shelly is going to practice in her backyard at 8 am, and she is inviting everyone who doesn’t want to hike but still wants to enjoy an outdoor practice to come.

Wednesday 8-9:30 pm Ballet Arts studio. A gentle evening practice with chanting and meditation.

Not having an exact count, we will ask for $10 per person to cover the studio rent. Thanks for participating with us

2008 Global Mala

This post from Leslie:

Here is a quote from the Global Mala site: “The Global Mala Project belongs to the global yoga community. This is a seed of a world-wide experiment into the power of meditation in action. The purpose of the Global Mala is to unite the global yoga community from every continent, school or approach to form a mala around the earth through collective practices based upon the sacred cycle of 108 on Sept. 21st and 22nd, Fall Equinox as the yoga world’s offering to further the UN International Peace Day. Each center offers their form of a Yoga Mala according to their yoga tradition and inspiration”

There will be 2 opportunities in Rexburg to celebrate with others around the world as part of the 2008 Global Mala.

Thursday September 18, 9-10 am Ballet Arts Studio. This is during our regular class time.

Saturday September 20, 8:30 -10:30 a.m. World Gym in Rexburg.

A mala is a string of beads. In a religious practice it is the prayer beads. A yoga mala is a string of sun salutations or some other practice using the number 108. A yoga mala could be used in celebration of each new season, or the new year or in celebration of a honored auspicious person. The best way to influence world peace is to cultivate peace in yourself. Unifying your heart, mind and actions with God or your conscience.

On Thusday morning Sep 18, we will practice a quarter mala which is 27 sun salutes. The first 9 will be for ourselves. What do we wish for ourselves for our highest and best good in the world? The second 9 will be for those we know and love. What do we wish for our family, friends and community? The last 9 will be for our enemies in the world or those that we judge or view critically. What do wish for these people? – knowing that what we send out for others will be what comes back to ourself.

On Saturday morning join Leslie at World Gym. If you do not have a membership you can come into the gym for $10 at the front desk. Have them point you back to the group fitness room. Beginning at 8:30 a.m. I will explain what the yoga mala is all about then at 8:40 we will begin 108 minutes of yoga practice. We will finish with relaxation and meditation at about 10:30 am

There are 3 parts to this yoga mala. Part #1 is the physical asana practice. The asana practice will be based upon sun salutations but will include other poses as well. The physical practice will help us have a still mind and body during meditation. During meditation we will ask ourselves the question: Where in my life am I fighting between heart, mind and actions? Don’t have think about the answer, just ask the question.

Part #2 is to attend church, worship service or participate in your own spiritual practice on Sunday. During this time or another time of meditation during the day see if the answer to your question of what is fighting in your mind, heart and actions comes clearly to you.

Part #3 is that when you receive your answer – DO something about it. DO what you are prompted. Forgive yourself for the inner conflict and act coming from a unified mind and heart. Unifying mind, heart and actions. This is YOGA

As part of the world-wide celebration each participant is asked to contribute to a charity. I do not agree politically with some of the charity organizations recommended by the organizers of the global mala, so I would advise that if you choose to donate something, make it an organization to which you already donate , or one that you know well or that keeps the funds for local benefit.

In case you are curious about why 108. Here are a few of the significant ideas surrounding the number 108-

The Indian Subcontinent rosary or set of mantra counting has 108 beads

Sanskrit alphabet: There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Each has masculine and feminine, shiva and shakti. 54 times 2 is 108.

9 times 12: Both of these numbers have been said to have spiritual significance in many traditions. 9 times 12 is 108.

The chakras are the intersections of energy lines, and there are said to be a total of 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra.

The diameter of the sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth.

The 1 of 108, and the 8 of 108, when added together equals 9, 9 is a sacred number in many traditions. The nine is the limit of all numbers, all others existing and coming from the same.

The universe is made up of 108 elements according to ancient texts. The current periodic table claims a few more than 108.

Pythagorean: The nine is the limit of all numbers, all others existing and coming from the same. ie: 0 to 9 is all one needs to make up an infinite amount of numbers.

Many Buddhist temples have 108 steps

In Japan, at the end of the year, a bell is chimed 108 times to finish the old year and welcome the new one. Each ring represents one of 108 earthly temptations a person must overcome to achieve nirvana

The number of stitches on a baseball.

There are 108 cards in an Uno deck

Time: Some say there are 108 feelings, with 36 related to the past, 36 related to the present, and 36 related to the future.

1, 0, and 8: Some say that 1 stands for God or higher Truth, 0 stands for emptiness or completeness in spiritual practice, and 8 stands for infinity or eternity.
