This post from Leslie:
Here is a quote from the Global Mala site: “The Global Mala Project belongs to the global yoga community. This is a seed of a world-wide experiment into the power of meditation in action. The purpose of the Global Mala is to unite the global yoga community from every continent, school or approach to form a mala around the earth through collective practices based upon the sacred cycle of 108 on Sept. 21st and 22nd, Fall Equinox as the yoga world’s offering to further the UN International Peace Day. Each center offers their form of a Yoga Mala according to their yoga tradition and inspiration”
There will be 2 opportunities in Rexburg to celebrate with others around the world as part of the 2008 Global Mala.
Thursday September 18, 9-10 am Ballet Arts Studio. This is during our regular class time.
Saturday September 20, 8:30 -10:30 a.m. World Gym in Rexburg.
A mala is a string of beads. In a religious practice it is the prayer beads. A yoga mala is a string of sun salutations or some other practice using the number 108. A yoga mala could be used in celebration of each new season, or the new year or in celebration of a honored auspicious person. The best way to influence world peace is to cultivate peace in yourself. Unifying your heart, mind and actions with God or your conscience.
On Thusday morning Sep 18, we will practice a quarter mala which is 27 sun salutes. The first 9 will be for ourselves. What do we wish for ourselves for our highest and best good in the world? The second 9 will be for those we know and love. What do we wish for our family, friends and community? The last 9 will be for our enemies in the world or those that we judge or view critically. What do wish for these people? – knowing that what we send out for others will be what comes back to ourself.
On Saturday morning join Leslie at World Gym. If you do not have a membership you can come into the gym for $10 at the front desk. Have them point you back to the group fitness room. Beginning at 8:30 a.m. I will explain what the yoga mala is all about then at 8:40 we will begin 108 minutes of yoga practice. We will finish with relaxation and meditation at about 10:30 am
There are 3 parts to this yoga mala. Part #1 is the physical asana practice. The asana practice will be based upon sun salutations but will include other poses as well. The physical practice will help us have a still mind and body during meditation. During meditation we will ask ourselves the question: Where in my life am I fighting between heart, mind and actions? Don’t have think about the answer, just ask the question.
Part #2 is to attend church, worship service or participate in your own spiritual practice on Sunday. During this time or another time of meditation during the day see if the answer to your question of what is fighting in your mind, heart and actions comes clearly to you.
Part #3 is that when you receive your answer – DO something about it. DO what you are prompted. Forgive yourself for the inner conflict and act coming from a unified mind and heart. Unifying mind, heart and actions. This is YOGA

As part of the world-wide celebration each participant is asked to contribute to a charity. I do not agree politically with some of the charity organizations recommended by the organizers of the global mala, so I would advise that if you choose to donate something, make it an organization to which you already donate , or one that you know well or that keeps the funds for local benefit.
