From Leslie: I am learning more about Ayurveda every year. (including how to spell it) Ayurveda means the science of life and is the medical model for the yoga tradition. Here is a little bit of background and some observation about the windy weather we have been having:
Each person has a certain constitution that relates to the qualities of air, fire, water and earth. We all have some of each but we also might show one quality more than the others. That is called a dosha. Your personal constitution is your dosha.
The first imbalances to be shown in any person are the vata or air imbalances. It makes sense since air and space is the most changeable and unstable of the elements. So if a vata or air person is out in the cold windy weather, it is almost a sure thing that they will be out of balance for the next few days and need to do something about that. These are the people who can least handle the windy weather – which we have been having lots of lately. The other constitutions will handle it better, but it will still be unsettling to all in varying degrees.
If you know you are a vata-air constitution, stay out of the wind as much as possible. Do things that are the opposite of cold and windy. Warm and oily foods and warm, watery, slow and grounding activities. My DS, who is a Vata, had breathing problems after he was in the wind this past week. The remedy for his symptoms was a homeopathic remedy called Aconite, congestion tea (this is a specific blend that you get homemade at Nature’s Nook in Rexburg), extra sleep, and curtailing of extra activities. He improved in about 24 hours.
It looks like the forecast for this week is more wind, so be balanced and smart about your activities outside. The mornings are less windy so get out early to do your chores or exercising outside.
Just from the little that Shelly and I have studied about Ayurveda, we have determined that Shelly is mostly Vata – air, and Leslie is mostly Pitta – fire.
